MJF 3D Printing

HP Multi Jet Fusion - The fastest powder-bed technology delivering production-quality parts with fine detail, consistent mechanical properties, and excellent surface finish.

What is MJF Printing?

HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) uses inkjet technology to selectively apply fusing and detailing agents to a bed of nylon powder, which is then fused with infrared heat. This produces parts with consistent properties, fine detail, and smooth surfaces faster than traditional powder-bed processes.

Best For

  • Production runs of functional parts
  • Parts requiring consistent mechanical properties
  • Complex geometries without support needs
  • Fine details and crisp edges
  • Cost-effective medium/high volume production
  • Parts requiring watertightness after sealing

Limitations

  • Parts are dark grey/black by default
  • Surface has slight texture (smoother than SLS)
  • Enclosed cavities need escape holes
  • Higher minimum order values for economy

MJF Design Guidelines

Optimise your designs for MJF production.

Wall Thickness

Minimum: 0.5mm
Recommended: 1mm+

MJF can achieve thinner walls than SLS due to finer resolution.

No Supports Needed

Overhangs: Unlimited
Freedom: Full design freedom

Like SLS, MJF uses surrounding powder for support.

Holes & Escape

Min Hole: 1mm
Escape Holes: 4mm diameter

Hollow parts require escape holes for powder removal.

Fine Details

Min Feature: 0.5mm
Text: 1.5mm height

MJF produces sharper details than SLS.

Clearances

Moving parts: 0.5mm
Fitted parts: 0.2-0.3mm

Slightly tighter clearances possible than SLS.

Hollowing

Wall Thickness: 2mm
Lattice: Excellent for lightweighting

MJF excels at lattice structures for weight reduction.
